Pittsburgh has some pretty unique places, as I always like to talk about in here. One of those places is Klavon’s Ice Cream Parlor in the Strip District. It’s an authentic 1920s ice cream parlor and drug store, complete with a penny candy selection and the old, original medicine bottles lining the walls on display.
There is a bottle of Demerol solution just chilling on a shelf. This cracked me up for some reason.
We wanted to check this out, as did my parents, so as a slightly late birthday trip, we headed down to Penn Avenue for dessert.
This place gets pretty crowded on weekends apparently, so we grabbed one of the small tables in the center where we could scope out all the neat stuff around us while we ate our ice cream.
But my mum also wanted a cute picture of her and my dad sitting in one of the booths as if they were on a first date back in the day!
Michael is holding up their menu, which has more sundaes and splits than I ever thought possible! They also have seasonal ice cream and floats. I kind of want to go back someday to try a rootbeer float. My Aunt Mary used to make them for me when I was little, but I haven’t had one since the early 90’s!
Michael and I got a turtle sundae to split. Thank goodness we split it – it was soooo huge!
After we walked around and looked at all the old medicines and kitschy stuff (old phone booths, the Wicked Witch of the West’s shoes, and old perfume from the 1950s to name a few), we sat up at the counter for a picture so we could feel like we were back in the old days, popping in for a milkshake.
Outside the shop. It’s dangerously close to my favorite restaurant of all time, the Spaghetti Warehouse. Thank goodness we’d had a big lunch before coming, or we would have had to make an emergency post-ice-cream stop! (And then probably we would have had to stop back for post-dinner dessert!)
