Part of the fun of Proper Cocktail Hump Day is trying to sync the cocktail with what’s happening on the calendar. This installment (our fourth) happened to fall on International Women’s Day, a day celebrating the achievements of women in politics, society, and culture. In honor of the day, we thought back on all the great woman bartenders who’ve crossed our paths in Pittsburgh, and all the delicious drinks to which they’ve introduced us.
Eventually, we settled on a drink introduced to us by Hannah, a fabulous bartender who has shown us a lot of good tricks over the years. The drink Hannah made for us, years ago at Tender Bar + Kitchen, was a tweak of the Artist’s Special that she called the “Artist’s Special (Special)”.
Because we’re cocktail nerds (really, I guess general nerds with a special affinity for cocktails), when Hannah made us the drink, we dutifully wrote down all the ingredients. What we didn’t write were the proportions, but we generally remembered that it matched the original Artist’s Special, but with more bourbon. So this is what we used:
2 oz bourbon
1 oz Amontillado Sherry
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/2 oz grenadine (here’s the recipe we use to make it)
1 egg white
dry-shake ingredients to thoroughly mix (no ice), then shake with ice until tin is frosty; double-strain into a coupe glass, up
Be careful, because you can’t taste the booze in this drink at all…but it is freaking there. We highly recommend adding this drink to your arsenal. Thanks for sharing it with us, Hannah!
And do you have a mere bottle of Amontillado, or a full cask?
